In their first-ever match at a men’s FIFA World Cup™, Cabo Verde shocked the world by holding the European champions, Spain, to a historic 0-0 draw. While Bubista’s team defended incredibly well throughout the game to earn a clean sheet, goalkeeper Vozinha was easily the standout performer for the West African side. Here, the TSG’s Senior Football Expert and former Switzerland national team goalkeeper Zuberbühler explains how the 40-year-old used his experience, athleticism and excellent positioning to deny one of the world’s best teams for 90 minutes.

Part 1: Vozinha’s crucial saves
Zuberbühler highlights a few examples that demonstrate why Vozinha deserved his Player of the Match award. A specific chance from the first half showed how Cabo Verde’s defenders worked in unison with their goalkeeper to close down the front post, allowing Vozinha to position himself to make a save down at the far post. The TSG expert also points to a fantastic fingertip stop from a header following a corner, noting how the veteran recovered from a less-than-ideal starting position behind the goal line through excellent footwork, as well as determination and quick reactions. However, Zuberbühler saved his favourite clip of this section for last. It shows Vozinha making multiple decisions in quick succession: protecting his goal rather than attacking a dangerous cross, then rushing out to close the space for the attacker in possession, and recovering immediately to make a vital save. For “Zubi”, the sequence captures perfectly the concentration, quality and sheer composure that defined his performance in Atlanta.
Part 2: Claiming crosses under pressure
While Vozinha’s shot-stopping was exceptional, Zuberbühler was equally impressed by his commanding of the penalty area. Throughout the game, the keeper was well-positioned for the delivery and arrival of crosses, giving himself the best possible view of both the ball and the players around him, before making steps at the right moment to attack the ball and claim it. Often, this positioning was crucial when he had to decide to come into crowded areas in the penalty area and claim the ball cleanly. This, in turn, prevented Spain from creating dangerous second-ball opportunities in and around the goal area. Zubi notes how Vozinha’s decision-making was just as important, showing excellent judgment over when to catch and when to punch the ball. This blend of bravery and authority gave confidence to the defenders in front of him and helped Cabo Verde to stay composed under sustained Spanish pressure.
Part 3: Vozinha in possession
Finally, Zubi praises Vozinha’s distribution of the ball, particularly his composure against Spain’s high press with his “fantastic” right foot. Rather than rushing his decisions when being pressed directly by an opposition player, he remained calm and always managed to find the right option, whether playing through the press with a risky pass or over it. In one example, Vozinha delayed his pass, enticing pressure onto him before playing a beautifully weighted ball onto the striker’s chest. The TSG expert also emphasises the goalkeeper’s role as an outfield player during the build-up phase. He received passes regularly from his team-mates to create numerical advantages against Spain’s forward line. By varying his passes and showing confidence with the ball at his feet, Vozinha became an integral part of Cabo Verde’s setup in possession and demonstrated the value of a goalkeeper who can contribute meaningfully in every phase of play.
