The Technical Study Group at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Moscow 2021 created a Beach Soccer Analysis Framework to form the basis of the tournament analysis. Each phase of the game has been broken down and the analysis will use these phases of play to structure the observations of the tournament.

In possession

When a player from a team is in controlled possession of the ball

Build-up unopposed

The team are preparing the attack in Zone 1 and Zone 2 with all 4 opposition players between the ball and their goal. The opposition are in a low block and no pressure is applied to the ball carrier.

Build-up opposed

The team are preparing the attack in Zone 1 and Zone 2 with all 4 opposition players between the ball and their goal. The opposition are in a high block and no pressure is applied to the ball carrier.

Build-up against press

The team are preparing the attack in Zone 1 and Zone 2 with all 4 opposition players between the ball and their goal. The opposition are applying pressure to the ball carrier.

Combination attack

A sequence of play with a series of passes in Zone 2, Zone 3 and Zone 4 in an attempt to create a scoring opportunity.

Direct attack

A long pass or throw from Zone 1 or Zone 2 towards the opposition half against an organised defence.

Individual attack

An action by an individual player in an attempt to create a scoring opportunity.

Counter-attack

After recovering the ball, a quick attack where the opposition are in a recovery unorganised defensive state.

Re-start direct attack

A long pass or throw from Zone 1 towards the opposition half against an organised defence following a re-start of play.

Re-start counter-attack

After recovering the ball a quick attack where the opposition are in a recovery unorganised defensive state.

Out of possession

When a player from the opposition team has controlled possession of the ball

High press organised

Pressure is applied to the ball carrier in the opposite half of the pitch (Zone 3 and Zone 4) by 2 or more players.

High press individual

Pressure is applied to the ball carrier in the opposite half of the pitch (Zone 3 and Zone 4) by a single player.

High block

2 or more players are positioned in the opposition half in an organised defensive state however are not applying pressure to the ball carrier.

Low block

All 4 players are positioned inside their half in an organised defensive state.

Recovery

After turning over the ball the players are returning to their own half in an unorganised defensive state.

Counter press

After losing possession of the ball the player(s) immediately put pressure on the ball carrier in an attempt to instantly recover possession of the ball.

Set-plays

A distribution action to restart the play from either a corner, freekick, throw-in, kick-off or penalty

Kick-off

The phase of play following a kick-off.

Corner kick

The phase of play following a corner kick.

Attacking throw-in

The phase of play following an attacking throw-in with the hands or feet.

Free kick zone 1

The phase of play following a free kick from Zone 1 on the pitch.

Free kick zone 2

The phase of play following a free kick from Zone 2 on the pitch.

Free kick zone 3

The phase of play following a free kick from Zone 3 on the pitch.

Penalty

An attempt at goal from 9m.
