Over the course of the FIFA Club World Cup 2021, our Technical Study Group (TSG) are tasked with selecting the Man of the Match for every game. Here we take a closer look at their performances.

The third game of the tournament took place at the Mohamed Bin Zayed Stadium as Al Hilal overcame hosts Al Jazira in front of 12,538 vocal supporters. Despite conceding an early goal, Al Hilal dominated the game and ran out 6-1 winners.

Attacking midfielder Matheus Pereira was selected by our TSG as Man of the Match with an influential performance, particularly in relation to attacking play. With one goal from his four attempts in addition to one assist, he also applied 50 defensive pressures when his team were out of possession.

Al Hilal’s intricate forward play with clever combinations, was a key factor in their ability to cut through the Al Jazira defence and Pereira’s influence was significant.

Steve McClaren observed the game and commented, "It’s quite a rarity in the modern game to see an actual No.10 playing that role in the traditional way. Often No.10’s get dragged out into wide areas due to compact and narrow defences that eliminate the spaces, but it was really nice to see a player always looking to receive the ball in that area between the opposition defence and midfield.

His teammates were always looking to play to him. Why? Technically he was excellent at receiving the ball and opening up, to face the opponent’s goal. And once forward facing, you could see his creative thinking in playing the final pass for a teammate. As well as providing chances, he scored the goal of the game, combining brilliantly with Salem before a sublime finish with his left foot.

His set-play deliveries were also excellent, with pinpoint accuracy. He’s a player who also demonstrated he can be a team player and we really look forward to watching him again."
