The ball can enter the in-contest state in many moments of the game and this usually occurs when one team perform a defensive or possession-contest action.
Possession contests such as duels, aerial duels and physical duels are when two players are directly competing for the ball on the ground or in the air. Physical duels can occur when a ball is played into space and two players are competing before it arrives in order to be the first to receive it.
The ball can also remain in contest following a defensive or possession-contest event, when neither competing player gains controlled possession of the ball. This can happen when a ball falls loose following a duel, after a clearance, if the ball rebounds from a goalkeeper who initially saves a shot, or from a block or deflection. Misplaced passes can also leave the ball in contest.
