The session begins with a game of Three-in-a-row. Afterwards the group play a game-related shooting exercise that emphasises accuracy. The session ends with a small-sided game with 'floaters', where one team aims to keep position whilst the other tries to score.

Warm-up: 3 in a row warm up

Organisation

  • Two teams play three in a row - maximum of five players per team
  • Players take turns to place bibs, balls or other objects to make three in a row
  • Explain that the task requires teamwork to successfully complete the task.
  • Explain that as they take their turn, they must relate their placing of a bib as a good human activity towards reversing climate change. The group as a whole are trying to win the battle to raise awareness of climate change
  • Explain that they will have to elaborate on those human activities later.
  • Players can race at the same time, so it becomes about speed and quick thinking

Ways to make the exercise easier

  • Players can start closer to the cones
  • Explain that this phase of starting closer to the cones relates local efforts, making attempts to change things locally

Ways to make the exercise harder

  • Players start further away and have to run in different ways
  • Explain that this phase of starting further away from the cones relates to human activities further away from the local setting, making attempts to influence and join up efforts in global advocacy, raising awareness of climate change
  • Players have to dribble a ball while playing
  • Make the game bigger so its 4 in a row

Great questions to ask the children

  • Can you think about the best way to play the game?
  • Can you react quickly to your opponent’s move?
  • Being aware of changes to the environment and communicating with the rest of the 'defenders' of the universe to protect the ecosystem
  • Which is the best square to have your colour in?

 Safety tips

  • Players should go one at a time
  • Each of us has a role to play in order to win the fight to save our planet. Each action contributes to the team effort
  • Create a safe playing area

Skill development: Game related shooting accuracy

Organisation

  • Organise a 5v5 game with four targets on each side
  • Teams play normal football, and to win the game they have to knock down all the targets before the other team
  • Explain that in order to win the fight against climate change, raising awareness of the human activities that contribute to climate change need to be widely known, masses educated on causes of climate change. For each cone that your TEAM knocked, it represents a human activity that is causing climate change.

Ways to make the exercise easier

  • Make the targets bigger or create target goals or areas to shoot into

Ways to make the exercise harder

  • Use smaller targets or more targets
  • Require players to be at least five metres away to shoot

Great questions to ask the children

  • Can you pass to a team-mate who has a shooting opportunity?
  • Teamwork is vital to win the battle against human activities causing climate change, hence passing the ball to those with a good shooting opportunity may relate to  influencers, those whose voice or influence can persuade others to alter their behaviours
  • What is the best way to shoot accurately over a short distance?
  • If you are defending, can you prevent the shot from hitting the target?

 Safety tips

  • Create a safe playing area

Game application: Small sided Game with floaters

Organisation

  • Play 5v5 on the pitch and each team has four floaters on the outside
  • Floaters on the attacking team stand beside the goals, and floaters on the passing team at the sides of the pitch
  • Both teams have different objectives: the attacking team has to score in either goal by combining with floaters, while the passing team has to complete eight passes to score a point
  • The first team to five points/goals is the winner
  • Rotate positions of the teams and also rotate floaters, so that players experience all three challenges

Ways to make the exercise easier

  • The passing team can reach 5 passes to score a point
  • Give the attacking team the choice to combine with floaters or score directly from open play

Ways to make the exercise harder

  • Require the passing team to reach ten passes to score a point
  • Attacking team to score directly off passes from the floaters

Great questions to ask the children

  • Can the passing team create as much space as possible on the pitch by spreading wide and long?
  • Can the attacking team play to its floaters as quickly as possible?
  • Can the attacking team take up great positions to receive the ball in a scoring position?

Safety tips

  • Create a safe playing area
